CYCLING, WALKING, DISCOVERY
Renesse is right next to the surprisingly beautiful nature area that extends from the Westerschouwen woods to Brouwersdam. The Dutch Forestry Commission has set out a number of attractive hiking and biking trails here. Visit the Oosterschelde National Park (or Neeltje Jans, which is in it) and go spotting the many seals and porpoises that live in the area. The reception has free bicycle route maps for letting you discover the splendid former island by bike or on foot.
ART & CULTURE
The Zeeland Museum is located in a abbey from the Middle Ages in the centre of Middelburg. The museum uses contemporary presentations to show an unexpected side of Zeeland. The Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk looks back on the days around the flood disaster of 1953, and the Stadhuismuseum in Zierikzee relates the history of Schouwen and Duiveland through the ages.
PICTURESQUE TOWNS
Brouwershaven, Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg are all well worth visiting. A great deal can still be seen of the riches of times gone by. Veere and Brouwershaven were among the richest towns in the Netherlands, partly because of the strategic location for access to England and Scotland. Imports of wool and spices and the headquarters of the East India Company created a lot of employment opportunities and wealth. Those riches can still be seen in the many splendid listed houses, country residences and parks in Zeeland.
CHILDREN
The Arsenaal in Vlissingen is the biggest pirate park in the Netherlands. Children can experience at first hand what it’s really like to be a pirate. This theme park (which is in no way boring!) about the Delta Works also includes a seal show, a water slide and a water playground. During the summer months, a steam train runs daily from Ouddorp along the Grevelingen to Scharendijke – an absolute must for the children.
